Health Topics from the Health and Phy-Ed Department

Hello SLP Middle School Families,
We hope you enjoyed Healthy Topics Newsletters!  Our hope is that these newsletters spark
conversation with your middle schooler.  We welcome your feedback and hope that you connect in
some way with these monthly “newsletters”.

January’s hot health topic is...Getting Active Outside!

Is it safe to be outside in January? Can you still be active and have fun outdoors when the
temperature drops?  YES YOU CAN! We as Minnesotans are hardy people and can thrive in the
bitter cold but we also must make sure we are safe. Conditions at times can be icy and wind chills
can become dangerous but this should not limit us getting outside and being active. Knowing when
it is safe for your students to be outside and when it is not is a great lesson to teach. Then,
encourage your children to get outside and have some fun while being active!! Challenge: What
can you and your middle school student do together outside to be active before the end of
the month?

Things to talk about with your child…
  • What outdoor winter activities does your child already enjoy?
  • Why is spending time outdoors in the winter time healthy for you?
  • What can your child do to be prepared for the colder outdoor weather this winter?
  • How can your child warm up inside after being outdoors?
